It’s been a five-year process, starting with President Horace Mitchell’s announcement in 2005 that CSUB would be exploring a move from Division II to Division I within the NCAA. That year, students voted to raise their fees and send additional money to CSUB athletics. And then, the community pulled together to raise $6 million for the Division I effort.
Yesterday afternoon, in front of a crowd of supporters and media at the Icardo Center, Mitchell and Athletic Director Rudy Carvajal made the announcement they’ve been waiting for: CSUB has passed all requirements and will begin Sept. 1 in full Division I status.
This means CSUB is now eligible for post-season play, something we’ve missed out on during the transition. The next step is for the university to join a conference. Big West is on the list of potentials, Mitchell has said. Will we be joining the nine other California universities in the Big West? (Including four CSUs, four UCs and University of the Pacific.) Time will tell, but for now CSUB is looking forward to competing again for championships. Go ‘Runners!
